The Sega Multi Mega / CD-X — All-in-One Sega Gaming

The Sega Multi Mega (CDX in North America), released in 1994, combined a Mega Drive, Mega CD, and portable CD player in a single compact unit about the size of a portable CD player. At approximately $500 it was the most expensive Sega hardware available, but it offered the complete Mega Drive and Mega CD gaming experience plus audio CD playback in an unprecedented form factor. The CDX could connect to a television for gaming or be used as a standalone portable CD player with headphones. Its high price limited sales, making surviving complete examples relatively rare and valuable to collectors who appreciate Sega’s most ambitious hardware integration effort of the 16-bit era.
