The Sega SG-1000 II — Sega’s First Game Console

The Sega SG-1000, launched in Japan on 15 July 1983 — the same day as Nintendo’s Famicom — was Sega’s first home game console, using a Z80A processor and Texas Instruments TMS9918A video chip. The SG-1000 II was a redesigned version with a detachable keyboard that could function as a basic computer. While commercially outperformed by the Famicom in Japan, the SG-1000 established Sega in the home console market and its hardware architecture formed the foundation for the Sega Master System. As Sega’s founding console hardware, the SG-1000 holds a significant place in the company’s history.
