The Sony PlayStation 3, launched in November 2006, featured the custom Cell Broadband Engine processor developed jointly by Sony, Toshiba, and IBM, a Blu-ray disc drive, and built-in Wi-Fi. The Cell processor’s unique multi-core architecture was extraordinarily powerful but notoriously difficult to program, and early PS3 games underperformed compared to Xbox 360. The PS3 recovered strongly: The Last of Us, Uncharted 2-3, Metal Gear Solid 4, and Journey are among the finest games of the generation. The built-in Blu-ray player also drove hardware adoption among home cinema enthusiasts, and the PS3 sold approximately 87 million units.
