The Sony PS Vita — Sony’s Final Handheld
The Sony PlayStation Vita, launched in Japan in December 2011, was Sony’s most technically sophisticated handheld — featuring a quad-core ARM Cortex-A9 processor, dual analogue sticks, front and rear touchscreens, and an OLED display that produced the finest image quality of any handheld at launch. Despite impressive hardware, the Vita struggled commercially against smartphone gaming and Nintendo’s 3DS. It developed a passionate following for Japanese role-playing games and independent titles, and Sony discontinued it in 2019. Its outstanding hardware and cult game library make the Vita fondly remembered as a magnificent handheld that deserved better commercial support.
