Tiger Sonic the Hedgehog 3 — Sega’s Mascot in LCD Form
Tiger Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was a licensed LCD handheld based on Sega’s flagship platform character — one of the most recognisable gaming mascots of the 1990s and Sega’s answer to Nintendo’s Mario. Tiger produced multiple Sonic handheld games across the hedgehog’s peak popularity years, and the Sonic 3 version corresponds to the third mainline Sonic game released for the Mega Drive in 1994. The speed and momentum-based gameplay of the original Sonic games was challenging to capture in LCD format, but Tiger’s version brought the character and some of the game’s scenarios to pocket format at a price point accessible to Sonic fans who couldn’t afford the Mega Drive hardware.
