The View-Master — Stereoscopic Image Viewer

The View-Master is a stereoscopic image viewer — an iconic toy and educational device that displays circular reels containing pairs of small colour photographs viewed through a binocular eyepiece to create a convincing three-dimensional effect. First introduced in 1939 by Sawyer’s Inc. and later produced by GAF and Mattel, the View-Master became one of the most popular and long-lived toys in history, selling billions of reels covering travel destinations, wildlife, space exploration, fairy tales, and licensed cartoon and film characters. The principle is simple but effective: two slightly offset photographs of the same scene, one for each eye, create the same depth perception that the human brain uses in normal binocular vision.

The View-Master’s longevity — over 85 years of continuous production — reflects the enduring appeal of the stereoscopic format and the breadth of its reel library. Collectors seek vintage View-Masters and their reels as artefacts of mid-twentieth century visual culture, particularly the travel reels documenting destinations and attractions of the 1950s-1970s and the licensed entertainment reels featuring characters from television and film of those decades.
