The AST Power Exel EL — A Premium 386SL Laptop

The AST Power Exel EL was part of AST Research’s Power Exel laptop series, one of the company’s flagship portable computers of the early 1990s. Using Intel’s 386SL processor at 25 MHz — a chip specifically designed for battery-powered portable computers with built-in power management features — the Power Exel EL represented the state of the art in business laptop computing at the time of its release. AST Research was at this point one of the world’s largest PC manufacturers, and the Power Exel series was their premium laptop offering aimed at business professionals who needed full IBM PC compatibility in a portable package.

AST Research — A PC Industry Giant

AST Research was founded in 1980 in Irvine, California, by three engineers — Albert Wong, Safi Qureshey, and Tom Yuen — whose initials formed the company’s name. The company first gained prominence as a manufacturer of expansion cards for IBM PC-Compatibles, producing highly regarded memory expansion and multifunction cards that were bestsellers throughout the mid-1980s. AST then leveraged this success to become a full PC manufacturer, growing to become one of the top five PC vendors in the world by the early 1990s with annual revenues exceeding $2 billion.

The Intel 386SL Processor

The Intel 386SL was a specially designed variant of the 80386 processor optimised for portable use. It incorporated System Management Mode (SMM) — a new processor operating mode that allowed the system to automatically reduce power consumption when components were idle — along with integrated cache controller and memory management circuitry that reduced chip count and power draw. Running at 25 MHz, the 386SL delivered performance comparable to desktop 386 machines while consuming significantly less power, making it the processor of choice for premium business laptops of the era.

Specifications

The Power Exel EL featured the 25 MHz Intel 386SL processor, 1 MB of RAM, a 1.44 MB 3.5-inch floppy drive, a hard drive, VGA graphics at 640×480 resolution with 16 colours, and a range of ports including expansion, video, parallel, serial, and mouse connectivity. It ran MS-DOS and Windows, making it fully compatible with the standard business software of the early 1990s. The Computer Museum Ata collection holds the main unit with its original power adapter.

AST’s Decline and Legacy

AST Research enjoyed tremendous success through the early 1990s but suffered badly from increased PC competition after 1995. Samsung acquired a controlling stake in 1996 and full ownership in 1997, but was unable to reverse the company’s fortunes. AST ceased operations in 1999. The Power Exel series represents AST at its peak — innovative, premium, and competitive with the best portable computers of its era.
