The IBM PS/2 Model 70 — The High-Performance PS/2
The IBM PS/2 Model 70 was one of the most powerful models in the PS/2 range, using the full Intel 80386DX processor with a true 32-bit external bus — delivering the best performance available in the PS/2 desktop lineup. Available in 16 MHz, 20 MHz, and 25 MHz configurations, the Model 70 targeted professional users and corporate workstations that needed the highest available PC performance for demanding applications including CAD, financial modelling, and database management.
The 386DX at Its Best
The 80386DX was Intel’s most capable processor of the late 1980s, providing full 32-bit processing with a 32-bit external bus, a built-in memory management unit for proper multitasking operating systems, and virtual 8086 mode for running DOS programs within a protected-mode environment. In the PS/2 Model 70, the 386DX combined with IBM’s fast MCA bus to deliver a workstation-class computing environment that could run OS/2 Presentation Manager — IBM’s graphical multitasking operating system — with reasonable performance.
Corporate Legacy
The PS/2 Model 70 was widely deployed in corporate environments throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s, particularly in organisations with large IBM installations where the PS/2’s compatibility with IBM’s enterprise infrastructure made it the natural choice. Its high price compared to equivalent clone machines reflected IBM’s premium positioning and the genuine advantages of the MCA architecture for enterprise networking environments.
