The Lenovo ThinkPad T61 — The First Lenovo-Designed ThinkPad

Released in 2007, the ThinkPad T61 was the first ThinkPad model designed entirely under Lenovo ownership — a milestone in the line’s transition from IBM to the Chinese technology company that acquired it in 2005. The T61 introduced a widescreen 14.1-inch display to the T-series for the first time, reflecting the industry-wide shift from 4:3 to 16:10 aspect ratios. Using Intel’s Core 2 Duo processor on the Santa Rosa platform, it delivered strong performance for business applications while maintaining ThinkPad’s characteristic build quality and keyboard excellence.

Lenovo’s Stewardship of ThinkPad

When Lenovo acquired IBM’s PC division for $1.75 billion in 2005, there were genuine concerns in the ThinkPad community about whether the quality standards would survive Chinese ownership. The T61 provided early evidence that Lenovo was committed to maintaining ThinkPad’s reputation. The keyboard remained excellent, build quality was solid, and the ThinkPad’s distinctive design language — matte black, red TrackPoint, clean lines — was preserved. Lenovo’s stewardship proved successful, and the ThinkPad line continued to grow under its new ownership.

Widescreen Transition

The T61’s widescreen display divided ThinkPad loyalists — many users preferred the 4:3 aspect ratio of earlier T-series models for document work, arguing that widescreen was optimised for video rather than productivity. This debate about aspect ratios would continue for years, with Lenovo eventually offering ThinkPads with 16:9, 16:10, and even 3:2 displays in response to customer feedback.
